It is just as important for your child to visit a dentist as it is for them to see their pediatrician. While all of our dentists treat children, we do have pediatric dentists on staff at several of our dental clinics.

A pediatric dentist, commonly referred to as a children’s dentist, has received at least two years of specialized training beyond dental school regarding the unique dental concerns of children. We believe that dentistry for children involves making both the child and the parent as comfortable as possible, and includes educating the parents on how they can help their child develop a lifetime of healthy dental habits.

When Should I Take My Child to a Children’s Dentist Near Me?

You should focus on your kid’s dental care as soon as he or she has a tooth. A child with even one tooth can get a cavity. Flossing becomes important as soon as the child has two teeth that are touching since cavities can develop between the teeth. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, a child should see a dentist no later than their first birthday.

One of the most common dental problems seen in babies and toddlers is baby bottle tooth decay. This occurs when a child is allowed to fall asleep with a bottle or sippy cup filled with milk, juice, sugar water, or formula. Instead of being swallowed, the liquid sits on the teeth resulting in cavities. We recommend that parents never allow their child to sleep with a bottle or sippy cup.

What Should I Expect During My Child’s Visit to a Children’s Dentist?

Your kid’s dentist will start by checking the teeth and jaw for any alignment problems. We can perform the exam with your child sitting in your lap or in a dental chair depending on their age and comfort level. Although very young children typically do not need dental X-rays, there may be some situations where they are necessary to rule out cavities and other issues.

What Services Does a Children’s Dentist Offer?

We are a full-service dentistry for kids and offer the following services:

Pediatric Teeth Cleaning

Our dentists and hygienists know how to get children to cooperate during the cleaning process.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel so that it is more resistant to decay.

Dental Sealants

Sealants smooth out the chewing surfaces of the teeth so that food and bacteria cannot get trapped and cause cavities.

Bonding

Bonding uses a tooth-colored material to correct small chips and fractures in the teeth.

Fillings

We use either amalgam or tooth-colored fillings to repair cavities.

Pediatric Root Canals

Even in children, it is possible for decay or infection to reach the soft inner pulp of the tooth, which can cause severe pain. When this occurs, it may be necessary to perform a root canal to remove the damaged pulp and save the tooth.

Pediatric Crowns

A crown is typically used to repair a tooth when the cavity is too large for a traditional filling or to reinforce the tooth following a root canal.

Mouthguards

Our dentists can fit your child for a custom mouthguard to reduce the risk of loose, broken, or lost teeth during athletic activities. According to the American Dental Association, children should wear a mouthguard during any sports activity where there is the potential for a fall or blow to the face, including hockey, football, ice skating, gymnastics, boxing, and basketball.
